Day-wise itinerary

Day 1: Haridwar / Rishikesh to Chopta

Start early from Haridwar or Rishikesh and drive along the Ganga through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath to Chopta. Stop for tea and meals on the way, then check in at your camp or hotel on arrival. Spend the evening at leisure, and attend a short briefing from your trek guide on the next day's route and what to carry. The drive takes around 7 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Day 2: Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila, Return to Chopta

Begin the trek early in the morning from Chopta on the paved trail to Tungnath, one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, passing through rhododendron and oak forest and open alpine meadows. After a short break and darshan at Tungnath, continue the steeper climb to Chandrashila summit, where clear weather rewards you with views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba and Bandarpunch. Descend the same way to Chopta in the afternoon, relax and have dinner at the stay. The trek is about 3.5 km one way to Tungnath, with roughly 1.5 km more to Chandrashila, and takes around 7 to 9 hours for the round trip including breaks.

Day 3: Chopta to Haridwar / Rishikesh

After breakfast and a short walk around the meadows, check out and drive back to Haridwar or Rishikesh. The tour ends on arrival, with drop-off at your preferred point.

Important information

Important travel information

The Tungnath and Chandrashila trek depends on weather, snow and trail conditions, and may be shortened or stopped at Tungnath if conditions are unsafe. The guide's decision on safety is final. Chopta has heavy snowfall in winter, usually from December to February, and the trail can close, so check conditions before travelling. Road access between Rishikesh and Chopta can be affected by landslides during the monsoon (July to September) and by snow in winter, so travel timings and the itinerary may change for safety. Chopta is at about 2,600 metres, Tungnath at about 3,600 metres and Chandrashila at about 4,000 metres, so carry warm layers, a waterproof jacket, sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, trekking poles if you use them, a torch, sunscreen, sunglasses and any personal medicines. Start early on the trek day, as afternoon weather in the mountains can change quickly. Drink water regularly, walk at a steady pace and tell your guide at once if you feel dizzy, breathless or unwell. The trek is moderate, and guests with knee, breathing or heart concerns should check with a doctor before booking. Mobile networks and ATMs are limited in Chopta, so carry enough cash. Camps and hotels in Chopta are basic, and electricity and hot water may be limited. Please carry back your waste and respect the temple and the meadows. Cancellation terms, the payment schedule and the final inclusions will be shared in writing with your confirmed quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can this package be customised? Yes, request a quote with your dates, number of travellers and preferences.

Is the price fixed? No confirmed starting price has been provided; request a current quotation.

Are activities guaranteed? No. They depend on weather, season, permissions and the confirmed itinerary.

How difficult is the Tungnath Chandrashila trek? It is a moderate trek. Tungnath is about 3.5 km one way on a well-defined trail, and Chandrashila adds roughly 1.5 km with a steeper climb. The round trip takes around 7 to 9 hours including breaks, and no prior trekking experience is needed.

What is the best time for the trek? March to June and September to November are best for clear views and comfortable walking. Winter (December to February) brings snow and a different kind of beauty, but the trail may be difficult or closed. The monsoon (July to September) brings rain and slippery paths.

Can I see snow on the trek? Snow is most likely from December to February and sometimes into March. Snow in other months is not guaranteed.

Is the trek suitable for beginners, families and senior travellers? Beginners can do it with a steady pace and regular breaks. Families and senior travellers can go to Tungnath and skip Chandrashila if they prefer. Share ages and any health concerns when requesting your quote.

What should I pack? Pack thermals, a warm jacket, a waterproof layer, sturdy trekking shoes with good grip, gloves, a woollen cap, a torch, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, snacks and any personal medicines.

What time does the trek start? We recommend an early start, usually around 6 to 7 am, so you finish before the afternoon weather turns. Your guide will confirm the timing at the Day 1 briefing.

Will I get mobile network and ATM access? Network is limited in Chopta, and ATMs are not reliable, so carry enough cash and let family know about patchy connectivity.
